Museum

The key issue: maintaining the wealth of the past and adapting it to modern times

The San Telmo Museum has culminated a process of renewal and extension required to reach out to the public in this new 21st century. The keystone to this project is the small architectonic "gem" incrusted in Mount Urgull and designed by the architects Nieto & Sobejano, featuring a characteristic facade covered in plants.

This new building, along with the 16th century Dominican convent housing the museum since 1932, made San Telmo a singular spot located right in the centre of San Sebastian, in the Old Town.

However, despite being the most visible aspect, the museum renovation is not just an architectonic metamorphosis but also revises the concept, affecting its definition as a museum, its aims and how it works, as San Telmo is reopening as the Museum of Basque Society and Citizenship, giving its collections a new reading.
