Section, containing over 15.000 pieces including images, stencils and plates, initially included in the History section but eventually given its own area due to its documentary nature covering topics from history, ethnography and archaeology, in addition to artistic photographs. We should highlight the "Galarza Fund" collection within this section.
This collection is composed of over 2000 photos that Gregorio González Galarza and his son Carmelo González took of Donostia-San Sebastian and other Gipuzkoa towns (Hondarribia, Lasarte-Oria, Hernani or Zarautz) particularly in the first half of the 20th century.
The authors' preference for the Gipuzkoa capital is reflected in the great quantity of photos (over 80% of the collection) portraying the physiognomic evolution of the city. The mainstays of the fund comprise many panoramic views of the Concha bay taken from Igeldo, Miraconcha or Urgull, perspectives of the Miramar Palace or spectacular waves breaking over the Paseo de Salamanca.
However, we should also give a special mention to the different scenes from everyday life in the city such as bathers on the beach, bull fights in the Chofre bullring, Carnival celebrations or regattas.
