Stained glass window made by the French company Maumejean Brothers for the Café Novelty in San Sebastián.
The Café Novelty was a smart cake shop and cafeteria opened around 1900. Located at number 15 on the Boulevard in a building owned by the Echevarría family, it was opened up as a café, cake shop and tea room, and was a highly innovative establishment. Novelty was open until 1917, and after it closed Trust Jewellers took its place but kept the stained-glass window.
Maumejean was one of the leading stained glass makers of its day. Founded in 1860 in Pau, it initially made its name creating stained-glass windows for churches and chapels. It was responsible for, among others, the stained-glass windows in Bayonne cathedral and Biarritz town hall. Between 1907 and 1909 it opened a branch on the Calle Pedro Egaña in San Sebastián, where it produced the majority of its commissions.
This stained-glass window, made up of the six parts on display, is a fine example of the taste and decoration of shops and other establishments in its day.
