The Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm (1953-1968) represents the continuation and development of the Weimar, Dessau and Berlin Bauhaus. It was founded in 1953 under the leadership of painter and architect Max Bill, designer and sculptor Otl Aicher and political and cultural activist Inge Aicher Scholl. It made a decisive contribution to the creation of the designer profession, going beyond the old applied and decorative arts schools.

After the end of World War II, Europe rebuilt its industry through design. In this new economy, the Braun company renewed its structures and products (initially thanks to the Ulm School and later on, by means of its own design department), creating a design accessible to large segments of Western society. Thirty years later, Braun’s aesthetic proposal became the reference for Apple’s designers.

System design prevails in response to the production needs of the industrial economy. Contemporary society requires organisation systems created through design to solve functional, and thus aesthetic, problems. The goal is to produce solutions that are useful for large and varied groups of users.
