San Telmo Museum presents the exhibition “Gipuzkoa Revealed”, a selection of more than one hundred photographs dated from between 1855 and 1930 from their photographic collection, which comprises around 15,000 documents. It is, without doubt, one of the oldest and most important collections in the city and the province, both for its variety of technical processes and its historical content.

Catalogue

The majority are original images, analysed from both their artistic and heritage aspects. They were taken using different techniques, according to the times in which they were created: glass, albumin and cyanotype, amongst others.
All of them, in their different formats and styles, give us the pleasure of seeing a moment in what was our environment and of our people in the past.

The physical state of the photographs tells us about their path from the moment they were created until now, when they are being presented before our eyes. Each one preserves many traces of the past: the continued existence of their protagonists, the gaze of whoever took them, the curiosity of those who saw them, the care of those who kept them.

We see the expansion of the city, the rural areas becoming urban, industry giving way to tourism, the new working and social forms of living together. An evolution that is linked to the history of photography itself.

There is a constant play between that which we recognise and that which has changed for good, between that which we find alien and that which, in spite of everything, we feel belongs to us.

The exhibition, curated by Elisa Querejeta and María Millán, is the result of a free grouping in which it is possible to appreciate the content of photographic documents, to value their artistic quality and to let the public connect with them, each in their particular way.
