"1516-2016. Peace Treaties" will bring together more than 400 works from great artists such as Goya, Rubens, Murillo, Zurbaran, Ribera, Picasso, Le Corbusier... The exhibition will tackle representations of peace in the history of art, culture and law. It is structured into the nine spheres into which the Iberian Peace School divided any peace treaty: territories, history, emblems, militia, deaths, population, economy, weapons and treaties.

The 1516-2016 Peace Treaties exhibition will tackle representations of peace in the history of art, culture and law. In addition, it aims to explore the complex forms and representations of peace throughout history.

Since 1516, the year that Utopia by Tomas Moro was published (featuring an ideal pacifist state), right up to the present day, the project covers the many different forms of peace, attempting to go into greater depth on the complexity and ambiguity of these representations.

1516-2016 Peace Treaties takes the figure of Francisco de Vitoria as a starting point; he inspired what today is known as the Iberian Peace School back in the 16th century.

This was the century of the wars against the "heretics", the expulsion of the Moors and the Jews and the colonization of the American continent. For the Iberian Peace School, these facts were particularly important and so constant references are made to these milestones throughout the exhibition.

The Iberian Peace School determined the spheres that any peace treaty should include to overcome war. These nine spheres structure the exhibition. The following spheres can be visited in the San Telmo Museum (the rest are on display in Koldo Mitxelena Kulturunea).

Five spheres of the exhibition in the San Telmo Museum

• Territories: This looks at the military conception of territory, invention of geography, maps and representations, political itineraries and maps; fortifications and military constructions; architecture, military machines and war machines.
• History: This refers to the allegories of history: history as a concatenation of war and peace; theology and teleology.
• Emblems: This refers to flags, standards and white flags; uniforms and soldiers in civil life; shields and portraits of soldiers as symbols.
• Militia: This looks at the poet soldier, the converted soldier, the fall of a horse; military life in civil life; rear-guard, military propaganda around peace.
• Deaths: This refers to cemeteries, graves, the Unknown Soldier, commemorative monuments; funerals, military liturgical ceremonies, military music; civil victims: women and children.

Three key aspects to the exhibition

• The exhibition includes examples from museums and exhibitions that have been held throughout history, covering similar contents to the Peace treaty project. These references have been slotted into the exhibition route to match each sphere of the exhibition.
• The show has been built around 21 works from 21 partner museums. Among others: Museo del Prado, Louvre, MNAC, Bilbao Fine Art Museum, Álava Fine Art Museum, Basque Museum in Bayonne, Museo Zumalakarregi, MNCARS, MACBA, Centre Pompidou, Artium and Fundación Oteiza.
• Along the route through the exhibition, there are 11 examples of pedagogic readings on conflicts throughout history. These examples can be consulted on the tablet devices in the exhibition.

Guided tours

• Guided tour in the San Telmo Museum. Every Saturday (from 25th June): 12.30 pm (Basque language) + 5.30 pm (Spanish). €3 + museum entry. No booking required.
• Trip to the San Telmo Museum and Koldo Mitxelena Kulturunea: two Tuesdays a month at 5 pm. Cinema

In July and August, there will be four film sessions on topics linked to the exhibition. In addition, in September, San Telmo will hold a discussion on war and peace in the cinema included in the Cine de ideas, ideas de cine cycle.

Night opening

On 27th August, from 8pm to midnight, there will be a night opening with free entry to the exhibition and the cloister.

Forum

Sessions open to the public where mediation managers from the institutions involved in the project (San Sebastián 2016, San Telmo Museoa, Koldo Mitxelena Kulturunea and Tabakalera) will present the mediation proposals developed within the framework of the Peace treaty project and discuss them, along with artistic practice and pedagogy.
