Tribute sculpture to Manolo Chopera Unveiled on 8th August 2004. The following inscription can be read on the base: "IN MEMORY OF / MANUEL MARTINEZ FLAMARIQUE / CHOPERA". Following the death of Manuel Chopera, the company in charge of the Illumbe bull ring responded to a need expressed by bullfighting supporters and contacted the artist about making the sculpture. The work was financed by the management company behind the Illumbe bull ring. A replica of the work is the trophy for the “World Apprentice Bullfighter Meeting”. Manuel Martínez Flamarique “Chopera” (Donostia-San Sebastián , 1927-2002), belonged to a family of bullfighting impresarios who have managed the biggest bull rings in the world. They have also been managers of many renowned bullfighters. Among other bull rings, they are the owners of Illumbe in San Sebastián. Chopera, together with his brother, inherited the “Hijos de Pablo Martínez Elizondo” ranch. He was a founding member of the Spanish National Bullfighting Consultation Committee and spokesperson for the National Association of Organisers of Bullfighting Shows.
