The Association of Ex-students of Lekaroz originally commissioned the work from a different sculptor, but because they did not consider the work appropriate they turned to a pre-existing work by Jose Mª de Vera, which belonged to the Padre Donostia Archive. The City Council gave its approval and granted it a place in the city. The Association of Ex-students of Lekaroz covered the costs of the hollowed bronze and the Regional Government contributed a marble pedestal. It was unveiled on 28th July 1974.
