After the death of Juan Cruz Lerchundi and in gratitude to this San Sebastián philanthropist, it was decided to erect a bust in the Zorroaga gardens to perpetuate his memory. An open competition was established for the bust, and another for the pedestal and another for the bronze casting of the winning bust. The winner of the bust competition was Gabriel Navajas, with the project presented under the slogan Gaztelupe. The bust was unveiled in August 1934. It features the following inscription: “To the distinguished benefactor / DON J. CRUZ LERCHUNDI / 1932-33".
